A great knife to start whittling with

I got the 2" detail roughout knife. It's fairly stout and comes with a hollow ground blade which offers a fine edge and a bit more lateral stiffness than a flat ground blade of the same dimensions might have. After a bit of sharpening this knife was used to carve cherry, spruce and maple. Like all carving tools it's best to keep it stropped sharp. If you feel like the knife isn't cutting the same way it was 5mins ago, it's time to strop again.

Love the steel quality all of Paul's tools are easy to sharpen and are very resistant to chipping even when taken to very fine edges.

Take care of your tools and they will return the favor.

Great Knife

I asked Paul to make a special version of the Detail Roughout Carver. I wanted 2" length shaped like the Slim Scalpel Carver and the Sloyd style handle. I love the knife it's fantastic. The narrow tip allows me to make scooping easily without the chatter. I have knives from a lot of different makers, but Deepwoods Ventures knives are my best and most favorite. Highly recommended.

100% pleased with Deepwoods Ventures' family business.

Master craftsman Paul Jones has made 3 knives for me They are the best ones I own. Deepwoods Ventures makes first class ,top quality products. Best knives made by good people.

A thicker blade for roughout work and a nice point for larger detail work. Good for stop cuts, flat plane carving and general roughing out of the carving. We have had a lot of people say they use this 1-1/4" carving knife for chip carving, even though that was not its original purpose. The "Detail Roughout Carver" is one of our carving knives of choice for the beginner wood carver. These wood carving knives come to you sharp and ready to use.

Knife Handle Length: Handles are approximately 5 1/4" in length. This does vary due to the fact that all the handles are handmade. There may be slight variations in the size and shape.
Handle Material: Each handle is created out of North American hardwood. We do our best to find a highly figured piece of wood for each figured handle. The wood shown in the photo may not be the same handle material you receive.
Blade Material: Our wood carving knives are individually forged from W1 tool steel, the benefit of this kind of steel is that it produces a nice hardness that can be easily sharpened and stay sharp for a long time.

Tang Length:

1 1/2"

Steel Dia:

5/16"

How We Make Carving Knives - Video

PLEASE remember you are ordering a hand made knife, not something stamped out by a machine. As with any handmade item there are differences in the exact construction, therefore the knife may vary slightly from the photos shown. The wood handle you see in the photo may not be the exact color and figure pattern you receive. Photo may not be actual size, please refer to given dimensions.
Our blades have a near mirror finish. This allows the blade move through the wood smoothly. There may be tooling marks still on the blade which do not affect the performance of the knife.
Each knife is individually made and we make every effort to get your knife in the mail within 10 working days, this allows 4 days for shipping. So approximately 2 weeks, give or take a day or two. Please feel free to ask any questions before ordering: Send Us an Email
