Welcome to The Deepwoods Handbook
Over the years, I've had the chance to talk with a lot of woodcarvers—from people picking up their very first knife to folks who've been carving for decades.
No matter their experience, many of the questions are surprisingly similar.
Some questions come from emails. Some happen at shows. Others come from conversations in the shop while someone is looking over a knife.
Eventually, I realized those conversations deserved a place of their own.
That's how The Deepwoods Handbook began.
It's a collection of the things I've learned through years of making carving knives, using them, talking with customers, and continually trying to understand what makes a tool feel right in the hand.
I try to provide practical advice, honest observations, and the kind of information I wish someone had shared with me when I first started.
Whether you're choosing your first carving knife, learning to sharpen, or simply enjoy understanding why good tools work the way they do, I hope you'll find something useful here.
Enjoy!
