Stropping Compounds for Wood Carving Knives: A Practical Guide
Over the years of making knives, I've spent quite a bit of time experimenting with stropping and sharpening compounds.
Not because I have a particular fascination with abrasive chemistry.
I just wanted to know what worked.
Start looking into stropping compounds and you'll quickly find discussions about microns, particle shapes, mineral hardness, binders, polishing rates, scratch patterns, and a whole lot of other information.
Some of it is useful.
Some of it can make something pretty simple sound awfully complicated.
So I'm going to give you the version I use in the shop.
Stropping compound is basically very fine abrasive without the sandpaper.
Put that abrasive on a leather strop, and it helps refine and maintain the cutting edge of your carving knife.
That's the important part.
Let's look at what the different compounds actually do.
What Is Stropping Compound?
Stropping compound is a fine abrasive applied to a strop to help polish and refine a knife's cutting edge.
Think of it as:
Sandpaper without the paper.
Instead of attaching the abrasive to a sheet of paper, the abrasive is mixed with some type of binder and formed into a bar, stick, paste, or similar compound.
You rub that compound onto the leather.
The leather holds the abrasive while you strop the knife.
As the blade passes across the strop, those tiny abrasive particles remove very small amounts of steel and help refine the cutting edge.
That's why a loaded strop does more than plain leather alone.
The leather supports the edge.
The compound provides the abrasive.
Together, they make a simple and very effective way to maintain a carving knife.
Stropping Compound Is an Abrasive
This is something worth understanding.
Stropping compound isn't magic polishing paste.
It's an abrasive.
The particles are simply much finer than what you'd normally use for sharpening.
That means stropping compound removes steel.
Not much.
But it does remove some.
That's how it polishes the bevel, helps remove the remaining burr, and refines the cutting edge.
The size and type of abrasive determine how aggressively the compound cuts.
Larger abrasive particles generally remove material faster and leave a coarser scratch pattern.
Smaller particles remove material more slowly and generally leave a finer finish.
That's where micron ratings come into the conversation.
What Does Micron Size Mean?
You'll sometimes see stropping compounds described by their particle size in microns.
A micron is simply a unit used to measure very small particles.
For our purposes, you don't need to turn sharpening into a math lesson.
Just remember this:
Larger micron number = larger abrasive particle.
Smaller micron number = smaller abrasive particle.
A larger particle will generally cut more aggressively.
A smaller particle will generally produce a finer polish.
Be careful not to confuse micron ratings with sandpaper grit numbers.
With ordinary sandpaper, a higher grit number usually means a finer abrasive.
Micron measurements work differently because you're measuring the actual approximate size of the abrasive particle.
That's why comparing sharpening compounds by color alone—or trying to convert every compound directly into a sandpaper grit—can get confusing pretty quickly.

Don't get too caught up chasing micron numbers.
They're useful for comparing abrasives, but they don't tell you everything about how a compound will behave.
The type of abrasive, particle shape, concentration, binder, strop, steel, and even the pressure you use can change how the compound feels and cuts.
For a carving knife, I'm more interested in the edge it produces than the number printed on the package.
What Is Stropping Compound Made From?
There are quite a few stropping compounds available today, but three traditional abrasives come up regularly:
Chromium oxide
Aluminum oxide
Silicon carbide
You'll also find diamond compounds and other modern abrasives.
Each cuts steel a little differently.
That doesn't necessarily mean one is better than another.
It means you can choose a compound based on what you're trying to accomplish.
Chromium Oxide Stropping Compound
Chromium oxide is probably one of the best-known stropping compounds.
It's commonly associated with green compound, although color alone isn't a reliable way to identify what's actually in a particular bar of compound.
Chromium oxide is a hard, fine abrasive that can produce a very smooth scratch pattern.
That's why it has traditionally been popular for final polishing and stropping.
For a carving knife, that's exactly the kind of work we're usually asking a strop to do.
We're not trying to reshape the blade.
We're refining an edge that already exists.
A fine chromium oxide compound can work very well for that.
It cuts slowly enough to give you control while still providing enough abrasion to polish the bevel and refine the cutting edge.
If someone asked me what kind of compound makes sense for ordinary carving knife maintenance, a fine finishing compound like this is a reasonable place to start.
Aluminum Oxide Stropping Compound
Aluminum oxide is another very common abrasive.
It's also used in many types of sandpaper and sharpening products.
Compared with a very fine polishing compound, aluminum oxide can provide a little more cutting action depending on the particle size and formulation.
That makes it useful when you want the strop to do a little more work.
For example, if the edge has started losing some of its bite but isn't dull enough to require a sharpening stone, an appropriate aluminum oxide compound can help bring it back.
Again, formulation matters.
Not every aluminum oxide compound is identical.
Particle size, concentration, and binder all influence how aggressively it cuts.
That's why I don't choose stropping compound simply by reading the color on the package.
Silicon Carbide Stropping Compound
Silicon carbide is another hard abrasive commonly used for sharpening and polishing.
You'll often see it associated with black or gray abrasive products.
It's also the abrasive used in many types of wet/dry sandpaper.
Silicon carbide can be fairly aggressive compared with very fine polishing compounds, depending on the particle size.
That can make it useful when you're looking for more cutting action rather than simply a final polish.
But remember what we're trying to accomplish on a carving knife.
If the edge needs significant reshaping or repair, I would rather move to an actual sharpening stone than ask a strop to do a stone's job.
The strop should maintain and refine the edge.
The stone should restore it when necessary.
That distinction makes sharpening a lot simpler.
Don't Choose Stropping Compound by Color Alone
This is one of the biggest sources of confusion with stropping compounds.
Green. White. Black. Red. Yellow. Pink and on and on.
You can find polishing compounds in just about every color imaginable.
It's tempting to assume that every green compound is the same.
They're not.
Color can give you a general idea of what a manufacturer intended a compound to do, but there isn't a universal color standard that guarantees every bar of the same color contains the same abrasive at the same particle size.
One manufacturer's green compound may behave differently from another manufacturer's green compound.
The same goes for white, black, and other colors.
Read what the manufacturer says the compound contains and what it is designed to do.
That's much more useful than choosing by color.
What Holds Stropping Compound Together?
Abrasive powder by itself isn't particularly convenient to rub onto a leather strop.
That's where the binder comes in.
The abrasive particles are mixed with materials that hold everything together and allow the compound to stick to the stropping surface.
Depending on the product, those binders may include waxes, oils, greases, tallow, or other materials.
That's why some compounds are hard bars while others are soft pastes.
The binder can also affect how easily the compound spreads and how it behaves on the strop.
You don't need to become an expert on binders.
You just need the compound to stay where you put it and release enough abrasive to do the work.
How Much Stropping Compound Should You Use?
Not very much.
This is probably one of the most common mistakes I see with stropping.
People coat the leather until there's a thick layer of compound sitting on top.
More compound doesn't necessarily mean more sharpening.
You want enough compound to load the surface of the leather with abrasive.
You don't need to build a layer of wax on top of it.
Apply a light coating.
Use the strop.
Add a little more when you notice the strop isn't cutting the way it used to.
Pretty simple.

If chunks of compound are rolling around under the blade, you've probably got too much on the strop.
A thin, even coating is all you need.
The goal is to put abrasive into the working surface of the leather—not frost a cake.
Does Stropping Compound Make a Knife Sharper?
It can.
But there's an important distinction.
A strop works best when the cutting edge already exists.
Stropping compound can remove very small amounts of steel, polish the bevel, clean up the remaining burr, and refine the apex of the edge.
That's why a knife often feels noticeably sharper after stropping.
But there comes a point where the edge has deteriorated too far for the strop to restore it efficiently.
That's when you need a sharpening stone.
Trying to repair a genuinely dull or damaged edge by stropping for half an hour isn't saving your knife.
It's wasting your afternoon.
The Strop Maintains the Edge. The Stone Restores It.
This is one of the basic ideas behind the way I maintain carving knives.
Strop often.
Sharpen only when necessary.
When I'm carving and notice the knife isn't slicing quite as easily as it was, I go to the strop first.
A few proper passes may bring the edge right back.
If they do, I'm finished.
I go back to carving.
Eventually, the strop stops bringing the edge back.
That's the knife telling me the actual cutting edge needs to be restored.
Now I reach for a sharpening stone.
After sharpening, I return to the strop to refine the newly established edge.
That simple routine keeps me from unnecessarily grinding steel away every time the knife feels a little different.
Should You Use Compound Every Time You Strop?
If you're using a loaded leather strop, the compound that's already on the leather continues working.
You don't need to apply fresh compound every time you pick up the strop.
Use what's there.
When the strop becomes noticeably less effective, add a little more.
Eventually, the surface can become heavily loaded with old compound, steel particles, and residue.
At that point, cleaning or refreshing the strop may make sense.
But don't make maintenance more complicated than it needs to be.
If the strop is bringing your edge back quickly, it's doing its job.
Leave it alone.
Can You Use a Strop Without Compound?
Yes.
Plain leather can still be useful for stropping.
But adding an appropriate abrasive compound gives the strop considerably more ability to polish and refine steel.
For the way I maintain carving knives, I prefer using compound.
It makes the strop a more effective part of the sharpening system.
The important thing is remembering that the strop is still a finishing and maintenance tool.
I don't expect it to replace my sharpening stones.
How Much Pressure Should You Use When Stropping?
Light pressure.
You don't need to bear down on the knife.
Too much pressure can compress the leather around the cutting edge.
That can gradually round the edge instead of maintaining the geometry you're trying to preserve.
Let the compound do the work.
Keep the blade under control.
Maintain the proper angle.
And remember:
Always move the cutting edge away from the direction of travel on a strop.
In other words, you're pulling the knife backward.
Don't push the cutting edge forward into the leather the way you might on a sharpening stone.
You'll cut into the strop.

Can You Over-Strop a Carving Knife?
Yes.
Stropping is gentle compared with sharpening on a stone, but that doesn't mean you need hundreds of passes.
Remember, the compound is abrasive.
And the leather has some give.
Excessive stropping—especially with too much pressure—can gradually round the cutting geometry.
For routine maintenance, I would rather make a small number of careful passes, test the knife, and repeat if necessary.
Don't count strokes simply because somebody told you a knife needs exactly 20 passes per side.
Pay attention to the edge.
That's a much better teacher.
How Do You Know When You're Finished Stropping?
Put the knife into wood.
A carving knife should slice cleanly without excessive pressure.
It should produce a smooth shaving.
It should feel controlled.
And it should leave a clean surface rather than tearing or crushing the wood fibers.
There are plenty of other sharpness tests.
People shave arm hair.
They slice paper.
They shave newspaper.
Those tests can tell you something.
But I make wood carving knives.
So eventually I want to know one thing:
How does it cut wood?
That's the test that matters.
Which Stropping Compound Should You Use?
This is where I think people sometimes expect a more complicated answer than I have.
Try a good-quality compound designed for knife stropping.
Learn how it behaves.
If it restores the edge quickly and leaves the blade cutting cleanly, it's doing what you need it to do.
You don't need six different colors lined up on the bench.
You don't need to change compounds every week.
And you don't need to chase whatever polishing compound happens to be popular on the internet this month.
I've experimented with different compounds because making knives is what I do.
But for the person sitting down to carve, simplicity has a lot going for it.
A good knife.
A good strop.
A good compound.
And knowing how to use them.
That's enough.
My Advice
Stropping compound is one of the simplest tools on the sharpening bench.
Don't let all the different colors, abrasives, micron ratings, and formulas make it seem more complicated than it is.
The compound is simply an abrasive.
Its job is to help the strop maintain and refine the cutting edge.
Some compounds cut faster.
Some polish finer.
Some fall somewhere in between.
Find one that works well with your knives and learn how to use it.
More importantly, learn when the strop has done everything it can do.
If stropping restores the edge, keep carving.
If it doesn't, sharpen the knife.
Then come back to the strop.
I've tried quite a few compounds over the years, and that's still the approach I come back to.
Use the compound that gives you the edge you want without making the process more complicated than it needs to be.
Then put the sharpening equipment away.
There's wood waiting.
